Cut and Fold: Chinoiserie and Origami
This exhibition will present the extraordinary paper worlds of Chinese artist Karen Tam and Japanese artist Schoko, who create magical and quizzical environments made of paper. Using the superb ancient crafts of hand paper cutting and paper folding associated with the artists' respective countries, the work goes beyond technique and craft into the language of fine art.
Whilst Schoko's paper folding - and unfolding- creates a parallel universe of forms whose origin is the square, rich in both aesthetic beauty and symbolic meaning, the chinoiserie motifs in Karen Tam's paper cuts are populated by characters taken from popular culture, revealing the ways in which Chineseness is perceived by the Western eye.
This will be the first showing of Schoko’s work in this country.
